House Refurb, Clapham
Morph design creatives were commissioned to provide full architectural and structural engineering design services to complete this refurbishment comprising a side extension to the Kitchen, internal structural alterations including the removal of load bearing walls, the provision of a new bathroom and the refurbishment of the rest of the house.
The clients wished to create an open plan ground floor of this typical Victorian terraced property to maximise the propagation of natural light and to provide flexible living accommodation. To do so, we designed a steel frame, concealed within the fabric of the property (flank walls and first floor), which leaves little trace of the walls it has replaced.
The modest Kitchen was extended sideways to provide a more generous space capable of being used as a contemporary family Kitchen/dining room. We opened up the rear wall with a large format door to better connect to the outdoor space. We provided a number of skylights to bring in more natural light and create a feeling of more space.
At first floor we rearranged the accommodation to provide larger bedroom and an additional shower room, by removing a bedroom. We then refurbished the remaining three bedrooms and family bathroom, with an emphasis on a contemporary aesthetic.
The result is a lighter, airier, more flexible contemporary family home.
