Kitchen Extension, East Finchley
The Client was looking to enhance the living space of their end of terrace period property by extending their existing Kitchen/Diner to the side to create a larger Kitchen.
We saw an opportunity to go further than this simple requirement by creating a multi-use space, without creating a larger extension with some judicious reorganisation.
After our initial review, our fundamental consideration was to maximise space and light both to the new spaces and to existing spaces which would be affected by the extension. This led us to consider a glazed roof to the extension. This offered an excellent opportunity to flood the family room with natural light.
We decided to introduce a mezzanine above the kitchen. We placed the mezzanine at a height to control the overall height of the extension in the first instance; and secondly to control the views out of the space, from the mezzanine to maintain the privacy of neighbours.
The mezzanine is accessed by a spiral staircase. Furthermore, we introduced a flush glazed floor light to the mezzanine, to ensure the Kitchen below was well lit with natural light.
Large format doors and windows which create visual and physical connections to the outdoor space completed the proposals.
This compact extension has transformed the living space of this property by going beyond answering the brief. We created a true family space. For entertaining, socialising, eating family meals, doing homework, as well as cooking.
